Boston Red Sox Preseason Report
Hi, Peter Gammons here. For the next couple of minutes I will breakdown the Boston Red Sox and compare them to the rest of the league.
Catcher- Jason Varitek
Backup- Doug Marabelli
Prospect- Ken Huckaby
Jason Varitek will come into the season in the captain’s role. Every single season this guy has came into Boston he has produced. You can expect a .280 average, 20 homeruns, and 70 runs batted in. He has started to show signs of age in his fielding statistics, but still is very solid with 8 errors last season. Doug Marabelli is a top backup catcher in the league and will have to stay on top of his game with Ken Huckaby trying to take over that back up role.
Firstbase- David Ortiz
Backup- Hee Seop Choi, JT Snow
Prospect- Ian Bladergroen
David Ortiz is a top five player in terms of offensive production right now. David is one of the most clutch players in Red Sox history and will be valuable to the team this season. The Red Sox would like to move him to DH, so he doesn’t make anyone suffer watching him with a glove on. JT Snow is a defensive specialist and will have his hands full trying to teach Ortiz the tricks of the trade.
Secondbase- Mark Loretta
Backup- Willie Harris
Prospect- Dustin Pedroia
Mark Loretta finally gives the Red Sox that guy to put after the leadoff hitter that’s dependable to get on base and even knock a few in. His career batting average of .301 definitely helps Boston on the offensive side of things. He has a career fielding percentage of .987 so you count on the Red Sox having at least half the ability to turn double plays over and over again.
Thirdbase- Kevin Youkilis
Backup- Willie Harris
Prospect- Andrews Pinckney
With Mike Lowell and his 9 million dollar a season contract no longer apart of the organization Kevin Youkilis will be asked upon to continue playing third base, which he played 24 games at last season. At 27 and in his second season he is in his prime the Sox will need him to produce on both sides of the ball if they expect to make a run at the 2006 World Series.
Shortstop- Alex Gonzalez
Backup- Willie Harris
Prospect- Christian Lara
Alex Gonzalez will have to have his best season ever if he expects to stay the starting shortstop for the Sox. Even though they don’t have a true backup shortstop they will be actively looking into free agency and looking for trades that would get them an upgrade here.
Leftfield- Manny Rameriez
Backup- Dustin Mohr
Prospect- Jeff Corsaletti
Manny, Manny, Manny, what else is there to say about this guy? The new general manager, AJ Kloehn, has already said publicly that he won’t take any lip from this fellow. If Manny doesn’t produce the way his money is paying him to I would expect a trade. Dustin Mohr is a solid backup and Jeff Corsaletti is only about a year away from making his major league debut, so Manny will need to stay on his toes if he wants to stay in a Sox uniform.
Centerfield- Coco Crisp
Backup- Dustin Mohr
Prospect- David Murphy
Rightfield- Trot Nixon
Backup- Dustin Mohr
Prospect- Brandon Moss, Luis Soto, Adam Stern
DH- Willy Mo Pena
Starter 1- Curt Schilling
Starter 2- Josh Beckett
Starter 3- Matt Clement
Starter 4- Tim Wakefield
Starter 5- David Wells
Closer- Jonathon Papelbon
Setup- David Riske
Short- Mike Timlin
Julian Taverez
Middle- Rudy Saenz
Long- Lenny DiNardo
Prospect Pitching-
Michael Bowden
David Pauley
Randy Beam
Craig Buchholz
Abe Alverez
Edgar Martinez
Jose Vaquendo
Manny Delcarmen
Craig Hansen
Jon Lester
Jermaine Van Buren
Well you said to turn it in unfinished:-/
